Andy Warhol was an American artist and filmmaker whose work included painting, filmmaking, photography, publishing, and performance art. A leading figure in pop art, he explored advertising, consumerism, mass media, and celebrity culture, often using mechanical reproduction. Born in Pittsburgh to Rusyn immigrant parents, he began as a commercial artist in New York. His studio, the Factory, became a center for avant-garde experimentation. He died in 1987 following gallbladder surgery.
