Skype was a proprietary telecommunications application operated by Skype Technologies, a Microsoft division. It provided IP-based videotelephony, videoconferencing, voice calls, instant messaging and file transfer across desktop, mobile and video game console platforms. Created by Niklas Zennström, Janus Friis and four Estonian developers, it was first released in 2003. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011. The service was retired on 5 May 2025, with its website redirecting users to Microsoft Teams.
