Uzbekistan, officially the Republic of Uzbekistan, is a sovereign, doubly landlocked country in Central Asia. It has a population of more than 39 million and is the region's most populous country. Uzbek is the official language, while Russian and Tajik are significant minority languages. Uzbekistan became independent in 1991 after the Soviet collapse. It is a secular state with a semi-presidential government and is a major producer and exporter of cotton.
