The Normandy landings were Allied landing and airborne operations in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944, during Operation Overlord in the Second World War. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often called D-Day, they were the largest seaborne invasion in history. American, British, and Canadian forces attacked five coastal sectors, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The operation established beachheads and began the liberation of France and Western Europe.
