The pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is a large, crow-sized woodpecker native to North America. It has a prominent red crest, a white neck stripe, and a mostly black body. Found in deciduous, Great Lakes, boreal Canadian, and some Pacific Coast forests, it mainly eats insects living in trees. It excavates large, nearly rectangular holes to reach prey or create nests and is listed by the IUCN as least concern.
