The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large, mainly white member of the true owl family native to Arctic regions of North America and the Palearctic. It breeds mostly on tundra, commonly nests on small ground rises, and is often active during the day in summer. Its breeding and population are closely linked to lemming availability. A nomadic, largely migratory bird, it may irrupt southward unpredictably and is reported to be declining.
