François Auguste René Rodin was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. Traditionally schooled, he used a craftsman-like approach and was known for modeling complex surfaces in clay. His works include The Thinker, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, Monument to Balzac, and The Gates of Hell. Though some sculptures were criticized for departing from prevailing traditions, he became the preeminent French sculptor of his time.
