The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second-largest penguin species and resembles the emperor penguin. It mainly eats lanternfish, squid, and krill, making repeated dives beyond 100 metres while foraging. It breeds on subantarctic islands near Antarctica, South Georgia, southern Argentina, and other regional temperate islands, and also lives on Macquarie Island and the Falkland Islands. Once commercially exploited, it is now fully protected.
