The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia and the only extant member of the family Phascolarctidae. It lives in coastal areas of eastern and southern Australia, where it commonly inhabits open Eucalyptus woodland. Koalas have stout, tailless bodies, fluffy round ears and dark noses. They eat mostly eucalypt leaves, sleep for much of the day, and raise early-developed young in a pouch.
