Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel was a French fashion designer and businesswoman who founded the Chanel brand. Active in clothing, jewellery, handbags and fragrance, she popularised a sporty, casual chic style after World War I and designed the interlocked-CC monogram. Her couture house closed in 1939. During the Nazi German occupation of France, she collaborated with the occupiers and Vichy regime. She returned to Paris in 1954 to revive her fashion house.
