The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is a swan species in the family Anatidae and the waterfowl order. Native to much of Europe and parts of Asia, it is also a rare winter visitor to far northern Africa. Introduced populations occur in North America, Australasia, and Southern Africa. The species is less vocal than other swans and is distinguished by white plumage, an orange-and-black beak, and a prominent beak knob.
