The coconut crab, Birgus latro, is a terrestrial giant hermit crab also called the robber crab or palm thief. It is the only species in the genus Birgus and the largest living terrestrial arthropod. Adults have a tough abdominal exoskeleton and breathe using branchiostegal lungs. They occur on islands across the Indian and Pacific Oceans and feed mainly on fruits, nuts, seeds and fallen-tree pith.
