Ur was a major Sumerian city-state in ancient Mesopotamia, at the site of modern Tell el-Muqayyar in Dhi Qar Governorate, Iraq. Founded in the Ubaid period around 3800 BC, it is recorded as a city-state from the 26th century BC. Its patron deity was the moon god Nanna. The site includes the partially restored Ziggurat of Ur, whose shrine was dedicated to Nanna.
