Ecuador, officially the Republic of Ecuador, is a country in northwestern South America. It borders Colombia, Peru, and the Pacific Ocean, and includes the Galápagos Province and its islands. Quito is the capital and Guayaquil is the largest city. Ecuador became a sovereign state in 1830 after emerging from Gran Colombia. It is a plurinational representative democratic presidential republic with an economy dependent on petroleum and agricultural exports.
