  • Geologic Time Periods

The Cretaceous was a geological period lasting from about 143.1 to 66 million years ago. It was the third, final and longest period of the Mesozoic Era. Its generally warm climate produced high sea levels and many shallow inland seas, while dinosaurs remained dominant on land. Flowering plants diversified rapidly, and new mammal and bird groups appeared. The period ended with the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event.
