The M1 Garand, also called the M1 rifle, is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge. Named for its Canadian-American designer, John Garand, it was the first standard-issue autoloading rifle for the United States. It served as the U.S. Army and United States Marine Corps service rifle during World War II and the Korean War. It replaced the M1903 Springfield in 1936 and was replaced by the M14 in 1958.
