Barry Goldwater was an American politician, Air Force Reserve major general, and Republican senator from Arizona. He served in the United States Senate from 1953 to 1965 and from 1969 to 1987, and was the Republican presidential nominee in 1964. His Senate work included defense and foreign policy, and he oversaw passage of the Goldwater-Nichols Act in 1986. Later in life, he supported several libertarian social positions.
