Cairo is the capital and largest city of Egypt and the Cairo Governorate, with more than 9.8 million residents. Located near the Nile Delta, it was founded in 969 and later replaced Fustat as the main urban centre. Greater Cairo has over 22 million people. The city contains areas associated with ancient Memphis, Heliopolis and the Giza pyramid complex, and its historic center became a World Heritage Site in 1979.
