Korea is a region in East Asia comprising the Korean Peninsula, Jeju Island, and smaller islands. It borders China and Russia and is separated from Japan by the Korea Strait. Following Japan's surrender in 1945, Korea was divided into Soviet and American occupation zones near the 38th parallel. North Korea and South Korea proclaimed independence in 1948 and fought the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. The peninsula remains divided by a demilitarized zone.
