David Émile Durkheim was a French sociologist who formally established sociology as an academic discipline. His work examined social integrity and coherence in modernity, and he used statistics, surveys and historical observation in social analysis. He became France's first professor of sociology and founded the journal L'Année sociologique. His major works include The Division of Labour in Society, The Rules of Sociological Method, Le Suicide and The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life.
