Heidenröslein, meaning “Little Rose on the Heath”, is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, written in 1771 during his Strasbourg period and first published in 1789. It tells of a young man who sees a newly blooming rose on a heath and resolves to pluck it despite its warning. The poem has often been set to music, including settings by Franz Schubert, Heinrich Werner and Franz Lehár. Its final stanza and possible meanings have prompted differing scholarly interpretations.
