  • Eclipses and Transits

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, obscuring the Sun totally or partially from a small part of Earth. They occur during eclipse seasons near a new moon, because the Moon's orbit is tilted relative to Earth's orbit. Total eclipses require especially precise alignment. Solar eclipses can be viewed only from relatively limited areas, and viewing the Sun outside totality requires special eye protection or indirect techniques.

Cause
The Moon passes between Earth and the Sun.
Frequency
At least two and up to five occur each year.
Viewing safety
Special eye protection or indirect techniques are needed outside the total phase.
