- New Religious Movements
The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the deity of Pastafarianism, a parodic new religious movement promoting a light-hearted view of religion. It originated in Bobby Henderson's 2005 satirical open letter opposing the teaching of intelligent design alongside evolution in Kansas public school science classes. The figure became an Internet phenomenon and symbol of opposition to intelligent design education. Pastafarian teachings include a satirical creation myth and reverence for pirates.
