The northern pintail, Anas acuta, is a migratory duck that breeds across northern Europe, the Palearctic and North America, then winters as far south as the equator. It inhabits open wetlands, nests on the ground and feeds mainly by dabbling for plant food. Males have long central tail feathers and a chocolate-coloured head with a thin white neck stripe, while females have subdued brown plumage.
