The Battle of Caldera Bay, also called the Sinking of Blanco Encalada, was a naval engagement during the 1891 Chilean Civil War. On 23 April 1891, Balmacedist torpedo boats Almirante Lynch and Almirante Condell fought the Congressional armored frigate Blanco Encalada in Caldera Bay. After Condell's torpedoes missed, a torpedo from Lynch sank Blanco Encalada within minutes, killing 182 men. It was the first ironclad warship lost to a self-propelled torpedo.
