Jeans are trousers made from denim or dungaree cloth. The term often refers to blue jeans, a riveted style developed from workwear; copper pocket rivets were added by Jacob W. Davis in 1871 and patented with Levi Strauss in 1873. Originally designed for manual workers such as miners, riveted blue jeans became popular casual wear through 1950s films featuring Marlon Brando and James Dean. They later became widely worn in Western culture.
