  • Christianity

Black people have been members of Mormonism since its foundation, though the church restricted proselytization efforts among Black people. Before 1978, Black membership was small. Membership later grew, particularly in Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean. In 1997, there were approximately 500,000 Black church members, about 5% of total membership. By 2018, an estimated 6% of members worldwide were Black, while in the United States approximately 1% were Black.
