Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was a Colombian drug lord, narcoterrorist and politician who founded and led the Medellín Cartel. The cartel monopolized cocaine trafficking into the United States during the 1980s and early 1990s. Elected as an alternate member of Colombia's Chamber of Representatives in 1982, he also supported local construction projects. After escaping imprisonment in 1992, he was killed by the Colombian National Police in 1993.
