Bangladesh held general elections on 29 December 2008, after a military-controlled caretaker government postponed voting originally scheduled for January 2007. The main competitors were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Awami League-led Grand Alliance won 263 of 300 directly elected seats. Turnout was 87%, the highest recorded in a Bangladeshi general election.
