Buffalo is a city in Western New York, on the eastern shore of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River on the Canada–United States border. It is New York's second-most populous city and the county seat of Erie County. Selected as the Erie Canal terminus in 1825, Buffalo grew as an inland port, grain port, railway hub, and steel-producing city. Its economy later diversified into services while retaining some manufacturing.
