Friedrich "Fritz" Hartjenstein was a German SS officer and concentration camp commandant during the Second World War. He served in the Nazi concentration camp system, commanding Auschwitz II-Birkenau from November 1943 to May 1944 and Natzweiler-Struthof from May 1944. After the war, British and French military courts tried him for crimes committed in the camp system. He received multiple death sentences, which were not carried out, and died in Paris in 1954 after release from French custody because of terminal illness.
