He served as Iraq's fifth president from 1979 until his overthrow in 2003, and as prime minister during two periods. His rule included the Iran-Iraq War, the occupation of Kuwait and the Gulf War, repression of uprisings, and human rights abuses. Captured in 2003, he was convicted of crimes against humanity and executed in 2006.
