The thylacine, also called the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf, was a carnivorous marsupial native to mainland Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. It had dark stripes across its back, a stiff tail and a marsupial pouch in both sexes. Once widespread in Tasmania, it was increasingly persecuted during the 19th century. The last known individual died at Hobart Zoo in Tasmania on 7 September 1936.
