France occupied Malta from 1798 to 1800 after the Knights Hospitaller surrendered to Napoleon Bonaparte following a French landing. The French introduced a constitutional tradition, free education, and theoretical freedom of the press, while abolishing nobility, slavery, the feudal system, and the inquisition. Maltese rebels later confined the French garrison to Valletta and Grand Harbour fortifications. The garrison surrendered when its food supplies were nearly exhausted.
