Azerbaijan, officially the Republic of Azerbaijan, is a landlocked country at the boundary of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, in the South Caucasus. Baku is its capital and largest city. The modern republic proclaimed independence on 30 August 1991, shortly before the Soviet Union dissolved. Azerbaijan is a unitary semi-presidential republic. Most of its population is Muslim, while its constitution does not declare an official religion.
