Horses in the United States

Horses have been part of life and culture in the United States since before the nation was founded. Horse relatives originally evolved in North America but became extinct there thousands of years ago. Spanish horses returned to North America in 1493, followed by further European imports. Native peoples developed horse cultures. Mechanization reduced horses' industrial, economic and transport roles in the 20th century. Modern horses are used mainly for recreation and entertainment.
