Islamic State

The Islamic State, also called ISIL, ISIS and Da'esh, is a transnational Salafi jihadist militant organisation and internationally unrecognised quasi-state. It proclaimed itself a worldwide caliphate in 2014, a claim rejected by most Muslims, and is designated a terrorist organisation by the United Nations. After losing its Middle Eastern territories by 2019, it reverted to insurgency while affiliates retained territorial presence in Africa.
