The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were United States aerial attacks on 6 and 9 August 1945, during the final days of World War II. Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima and Fat Man on Nagasaki. The bombings killed an estimated 150,000 to 246,000 people, most of them civilians. Japan announced its surrender on 15 August 1945. The bombings remain the only uses of nuclear weapons in an armed conflict.
