The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was a long-range, high-altitude strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed and manufactured by Lockheed Corporation. Developed during the 1960s by Lockheed's Skunk Works, it entered United States Air Force service in 1966. Its reconnaissance equipment included signals-intelligence sensors, side-looking airborne radar and a camera. The USAF retired it in 1989, and NASA operated it as a research platform until its final retirement in 1999.
