Melampittas are the New Guinean passerine bird family Melampittidae, comprising the greater and lesser melampitta in separate genera. These small to medium-sized birds have black plumage, strong legs and short rounded wings. They are mostly terrestrial inhabitants of montane forest, feeding on insects and small vertebrates in leaf litter. The greater melampitta is associated with limestone karst and may roost and nest in sinkholes.
