The praefectus castrorum, or camp prefect, was the third most senior staff officer in a Roman legion during the early Empire. Usually promoted from the centurionate after serving as chief centurion, the office was open to plebeian citizens. The camp prefect oversaw training, organization, logistics, requisition, equipment maintenance and camp construction. They also acted as liaison between the legate and centurions, and could command the legion when senior commanders were absent.
