A surgical anastomosis is a technique that creates a new connection between two body structures that carry fluid, including blood vessels or bowel. It may be used for vascular bypass or to restore colonic continuity after colon cancer resection. Anastomoses can be made by hand-sewn suture, mechanical staplers, or biological glues. Configurations include end-to-end, side-to-side, and end-to-side. Reanastomosis describes a surgical reconnection that usually reverses an earlier disconnection.
