Butterworth was launched in France in 1778 as the 32-gun privateer Américaine of Granville and was captured by the British Royal Navy in early 1781. She entered commercial service as America in 1784 and was renamed Butterworth in 1785. Primarily a Greenland whaler, she later joined an exploration and whaling voyage to Alaska and the Pacific Coast. She was lost in 1802 while bound for the South Pacific.
