Essequibo was a Dutch colony in the Guianas, located around the lower course of the Essequibo River on the north coast of South America. It was governed by the Dutch West India Company from 1616 to 1792, then by the Dutch state until 1815. Britain took control and merged it with Demerara in 1812. It became part of British Guiana in 1831 and was a county there from 1838 to 1958.
