  • Age of Discovery

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator from the Republic of Genoa. Sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs, he made four Spanish transatlantic voyages, beginning in 1492, that brought him to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. His expeditions opened the way for European exploration and colonization of the Americas. As a colonial governor, he was accused of significant brutality and removed from office; his government subjected Indigenous people to enslavement and other mistreatment.
