Hutcheson Macaulay Posnett was an Irish-New Zealand lawyer and scholar who helped establish comparative literature as a field. Born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College, he held the Chair of Classics and English Literature at the University of Auckland from 1885 to 1890. His 1886 book Comparative Literature linked literary history with social evolution and was among the earliest English-language scholarly uses of the term.
