A coffin portrait was a realistic image of a deceased person placed on a coffin for a funeral, then removed before burial. It formed part of the castrum doloris. The practice decorated the coffins of deceased nobles in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries, in the period of Polish Baroque and Sarmatism. The term can also describe Ancient Egyptian mummy portraits.
