Arctiinae is a large, diverse subfamily of moths, formerly treated as the family Arctiidae. It contains around 11,000 species worldwide, including 6,000 neotropical species. The subfamily includes tiger moths, footmen, lichen moths and wasp moths. Many species have hairy caterpillars called woolly bears or woolly worms. Its scientific name refers to this hairiness, using the Greek word for bear.
