The Mureș, called Maros in Hungarian, is a 789-kilometre river in Eastern Europe. It rises in Romania's Hășmașu Mare Range in the Eastern Carpathians and joins the Tisza at Szeged in southeastern Hungary. Its drainage basin covers 30,332 square kilometres. The river passes through several Romanian counties and Hungary's Csongrád county. Salt was traded on the river by large rafts in medieval times.
