Colonel Charles Stoddart was a British officer and diplomat active in Central Asia during the Great Game. Educated at Norwich School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he was sent to Bukhara to seek the release of Russian slaves and a treaty with Britain. Arrested in 1838, he was executed with Captain Arthur Conolly in 1842 on charges of spying for the British Empire. A Sri Lankan lizard species, Ceratophora stoddartii, commemorates him.
